Drip irrigation systems can be categorized by project scale into large-scale drip irrigation projects and small-scale drip irrigation projects.
I. Large-Scale Drip Irrigation Projects
Large-scale drip irrigation projects are typically used for fields exceeding 200 mu (≈13.3 hectares), such as orchards and vineyards. In these systems:
- Mainlines and sub-mainlines are usually buried underground.
- Laterals and emitters are installed above ground.

II. Small-Scale Drip Irrigation Projects
Small-scale drip irrigation projects are commonly applied in greenhouses for high-value crops like vegetables and flowers. These systems feature:
- A two-tier piping structure (only mainlines and sub-mainlines).
- Drip tapes/lines connected directly to sub-mainlines.
- All components laid above ground for easier maintenance and management.
